21 - 27 September 2020 is International Deaf Awareness week. During this period, different activities are celebrated by Deaf Communities Globally. This year, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) has issued a clarion call to all Deaf communities globally to join in by affirming, promoting and supporting the Human Rights of Deaf People globally. The theme for 2020 is "Reaffirming Deaf People's Human Rights" .
During this current Deaf Awareness Month (1 - 30 September 2020), the Tshepiso Mokoena Foundation initiated an online Campaign to raise awareness on Gender Based Violence (GBV). The campaign was joined by Hearing and Deaf women who volunteered to be Ambassadors for change and to raise awareness on #GBV. We believe that for one to fully enjoy human rights, our communties should be free from discrimination because of gender, language barriers, inequalities, citizenship, or any other subjective consideration, and every human being deserves equal access to justice regardless of background. Lack of access to professional and quality service of South African Sign Language Interpreters in the justice system deprives Deaf and Hard of Hearing women equal access to justice. Let’s us unite on ending this scourge and raise awareness on #GBV. Join us by becoming an ambassador for change to end #GBV. #WeSeeYou #WeHearYou
