The community functions like a feedback amplifier, spreading anecdotes of success that inspire others to chase similar outcomes. This comparative reinforcement extends the Skinner Box’s influence by introducing social validation as an added layer of motivation, keeping players locked into the loop even longer.

Critiques and Player Burnout

While the Skinner Box design can keep engagement high, it also raises ethical questions about manipulation and burnout. Many players report feeling drained after leagues, citing the grind for currency as both compulsive and exhausting. The game’s design rarely signals when enough is enough, pushing players to engage well past healthy limits. Critiques focus on how reward mechanisms in POE manipulate behavioral patterns to maximize playtime without necessarily improving enjoyment. The tension between player agency and engineered compulsion is at the heart of these concerns, revealing the darker side of its brilliant yet exhausting design.
